Job Summary:

The Writer/Editor of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) website (www.dana-farber.org) develops editorial content for the site and supports websites relating to Dana-Farber affiliations. He or she writes and edits material about a variety of subjects, including cancer treatments, clinical care, and the patient experience at Dana-Farber; and works with in-house writers, clinical staff, researchers, and freelancers to keep the website informative, current, fresh, and engaging.
Essential Functions:
- Generates interest from, maintains relationships with, and guides the editorial contributions of key institutional clinical, research and administrative experts
- Develops, writes, and edits clear, concise, patient-friendly Web content
- Rewrites and optimizes website content to improve search engine rankings
- Guides in-house writers and freelancers in the development of new Web content, including patients stories, blog entries, and interactive features
- Researches competitor websites and provides suggestions for new content and functionality
- Monitors website analytics
- Contributes to Dana-Farbers social media presence through Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google + and other networking sites
- Ensures the daily quality, continuity of message, and accuracy of website content
- Works closely with people and client groups throughout the Institute to coordinate the promotion of key Institute initiatives online
- Works with Associate Director of Interactive Communications to create new sections and features on the website
- Works with Communications Department staff to develop strategies to increase the visibility of DFCI websites and content on the Internet, in DFCI publications, and in the external media
- Works with Editor of Jimmy Fund website to expand sections of that site and coordinate fundraising initiatives, when needed
- Enlists and works with Communications Department staff to support the editorial needs and priorities of www.dana-farber.org
Job Qualifications:
- Experience as senior editor and team manager with 6-10 years of professional writing, and editing (at least 3 years writing for the Web)
- Excellent writing and editing skills and the ability to set and maintain high editorial standards
- An understanding of evolving trends in interactive communications and a commitment to staying current
- Must be able to coach knowledgeable experts to deliver clear and concise material on complex subjects
- The ability to direct an interdisciplinary professional team and to deliver on deadline
- Ability to respond with agility to breaking news and time-sensitive requests
- Enthusiasm and the ability to garner support and interest from contributors throughout the Institute
- Basic Web technical skills
- Experience working with a content management system
- A Bachelor¿s degree or equivalent in English or Journalism
Schedule:
Generally, a 40-hour work week, with some longer hours expected for certain Web-based projects.
