Job Description

Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager performs a variety of technical duties related to preparing and dispensing drugs in accordance with standard procedures and techniques.

 Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities  1.            Rotate through all work areas of the pharmacy. 2.            Transport medications, drug-delivery devices, and other pharmacy equipment from the pharmacy to nursing units and other departments as appropriate. 3.            Pick up copy of physician orders, medication administration records and unused medications from nursing units and return them to the pharmacy.4.            Refill pyxis machines in the appropriate areas as needed. 5.            Prepare medications and supplies for dispensing, including: a. Preparing bulk medications;b. Assist pharmacist in entering medication orders into the computer system;c. Compounding specific intravenous mixtures as approved by pharmacist.d. Preparing labels as appropriate for medication administration.e. Prepare inventories, order drugs and supplies from the storeroom; receive drugs and stock shelves in various locations. 6.            Assist with maintaining appropriate records regarding vaccine administration as require by the Department of Public Health.7.            Assist with billing and charging of specific medications including IV preparations as appropriate.8.            Assist with ensuring medications are appropriately stored including, but not limited to monitoring refrigerator temperatures in the appropriate areas.


 

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (cont’d)  9.            Assist with ensuring medications are checked for outdates on a rotating schedule and returning to the designated company.10.         Perform monthly nursing unit inspections, maintain workload records, and collect quality assurance data. 11.         Adheres to all policies and procedures of the pharmacy in a manner consistent with professional, ethical, and legal standards of good pharmacy practice.

Qualifications

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the Position Knowledge of:§     Record keeping techniques§     Skills:§   Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekend hours.§   Accurate typing skills (minimum 35 words per minute)§   Basic understanding of computer technology§   Attention to detail Ability to:§   Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.§   Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations.  Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all laboratory-related equipment as described on the Laboratory Department checklist.  Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.§   Ability to stand and walk constantly.§   Ability to help lift objects ranging from five (5) to hundred (100) pounds.§   Ability to bend, twist, crouch, squat, pull, push, reach, and remain stationary for short period of times and perform repetitive motions.§   Frequent bending, twisting, crouching, squatting, climbing, stooping, pulling, pushing, and reaching required, as well as the ability to remain stationary for short periods and perform repetitive motions§   Ability to use hands, fingers, arms and wrists, hearing, smell, and verbal skills are required in order to perform job duties.§   Ability to work as a team member §   Utilize face shields/mask, gloves, protective clothing, safety glasses and goggles. Credentials and Experience Required §   Completion of a formalized Pharmacy Technician program or the equivalent education or ability to complete program within 6 months of being hired.  Strong skills in Chemistry and math including a strong science background, knowledge of the metric system, knowledge of basic pharmacy practices and procedures, knowledge of medications and medical supplies, and strong mathematical computation skills.§   One year of hospital pharmacy experience preferred.§   National certification preferred . Special Requirements §   Although the position generally works the day shift, evening shift assignments, as well as the need to be on-call on a rotating basis for evening/nights, weekends, and holidays are required.§   May be exposed to the following hazards: temperature fluctuations, moderate noise levels, minimal dust, infectious diseases and other chemicals as would be used in a hospital.  §   Must be available to work overtime as needed to complete all job duties.§   Must be available to work in the case of a Hospital declared emergency.
