Provides technical expertise within the sterile environment, in assisting/supporting the members of the Surgical Team, to provide quality patient care.Further demonstrates a good technical knowledge of the surgical environment and utilizes this knowledge in assisting the Registered Nurse to provide surgical environment which supports quality patient care.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities1.Maintains a sterile environment as prescribed by Hospital policy and AORN Standards of Care, and adheres to blood/body fluid policies and procedures utilizing OSHA Standards.2.Functions under all aspects of surgical techniques, both routine and special surgical procedures and applies them in a professional manner.3.Functions under the direction of the Surgeon and the Registered Nurse to meet all aspects of patient care and safety4.Ensures proper instrumentation equipment in accordance with department protocol and surgeon’s preference cards.5.Provides a safe and efficient environment for the surgical patient.6.Respects patients’ inherent rights to privacy, dignity and safety.7.Differentiates sterilization methods for special equipment and instruments necessary for specific surgical procedures.8.Prepares and understands the specific use of all supplies and equipment used for surgical procedures.9.Assumes responsibility for orientation of new Operating Room employees, as required.Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities (cont’d)10.Assists in the preparation/labeling of medications during the “surgical procedure”, under the direction of the Surgeon and Registered Nurse, according to Pharmacy and Standards of care.11.Understands the importance of teamwork, consideration and cooperation. Understands the need to be actively involved in universal Protocol and “Hard Time Out”12.Understands the function of a “first assist”. 13.Understands and assists with patient positioning devices/equipment, ensures proper patients positioning and safety.14.Works in conjunction with the Registered Nurse and CSR Tech. to update and maintain equipment and instrumentation of specialty services.15.Participates in unit staff meetings, in-service programs and educational programs relative to career development.Performs other work related duties and activities as assigned or requested by his/her immediate supervisor.
Qualifications
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required for the PositionKnowledge of:§Knowledge of current nursing standards of practice required.§Maintains skill level and certification on an ongoing basis.Skills:§Must be able to demonstrate adequate technical skills and judgment to function unsupervised during on-call, second shift, and weekend hours.§Must be able to function in CSR to cover needs. Ensures proper preparation of instruments and equipment§Ability to:§Ability to tactfully communicate with both internal and external customers.§Ability to handle stress and work in emergency situations.§Ability to assist patients on and off equipment.§Ability to move quickly in the event of an emergency.§Ability to stand and walk approximately ninety percent (90%) of shift, with frequent climbing, bending, reaching, stooping, squatting, and helping to lift objects and/or patients ranging from five (5) to three hundred (300) or more pounds.§Ability to use of fingers and hands to operate all department-related equipment as described on the Department checklist.Additionally, must use beeper, telephone, calculator, fax, and other related office equipment.§Credentials and Experience Required§Graduate of an Accredited Civilian or Military Operating Room Technician Program.§Three years of related experience.§Certified Operating Room TechnicianSpecial Requirements§Must be available to work day, evening, and/or night shift as well as rotation on weekends as assigned to meet hospital needs.§Must be available to work in the case of a declared hospital emergency.
