Job Summary:

The Coding Specialist is responsible for applying diagnostic and procedural codes to patient health information for data retrieval, analysis, and claims processing. The Coding Specialist will abstract pertinent information from outpatient records and assign ICD-9 CM, CPT, HCPCS, and modifiers utilizing the 3M encoder. This individual will act as a liaison with physicians in order to obtain medical information required for diagnosis and procedure coding. The Coding Specialist will assist in staff training, education sessions, and participate in team meetings as needed and requested by management. This individual will work closely with the Patient Accounting Department in resolution of denials, billing, and coding issues. This individual will participate and conduct audits as requested by management.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Works as a liaison to physicians in order to obtain medical information required for diagnosis and procedure coding
Assists in staff training, education sessions, and participates in team meetings as requested by management
Effectively abstracts pertinent information from outpatient records and assigns codes utilizing 3M
Knowledge of ICD-9 CM, CPT, HCPCS Codes
Effectively collaborates with Patient Accounting to solve denials, billing, and coding issues
Conducts effective audits as requested by management

Job Qualifications:

Bachelors degree equivalent experience required
CCS/CPC or be eligible for certification within one year of hire
Dependable self-starter, able to set priorities, manage multiple data needs, and meet deadlines
Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication and organizational skills
Ability to work well independently on a team and as a trainer/facilitator

Schedule:

40 hours, Monday - Friday
