POSITION SUMMARY: The Lab Support Technician under the supervision of Support Services Supervisor and Director of laboratory Services performs services in the Laboratory according to the policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives of the department and hospital. Works cooperatively within department and other services to create a system of quality health care.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES Maintain current knowledge in area(s) of performing a variety of laboratory support duties to assist in the efficient operation of the laboratory, such as the ordering of tests; collection, preparation and handling of samples; reporting of results of laboratory testing; EKG recordings; and pulse oximetry in accordance with prescribed procedures.

Performs position specific job functions at an acceptable level.
A.Accurately identifies patients and patient samples per policy.
B. Ensures accurate ordering of tests in Laboratory Information System and clarifies confusing or incomplete orders.
C. Consistently reviews physician orders to ensure physician signature is present, and follows up appropriately to obtain missing signatures.
D. Reviews workload to prioritize draws by patient type and priority, and ensure inpatient/ED samples received in Lab within 20 minutes and outpatients experience no more than a 15 minute wait.
E. Ensures specimen appropriateness and maintains specimen integrity.
F. Prepares biological samples, including centrifugation, storage, and packaging for transport to Laboratory in accordance with safety policies
G. Efficiently and accurately reports results including timely communication of stat and critical results, with appropriate documentation in the LIS Call Queue.
H. Assists with inventory management by documenting received and open dates on supplies as required by policy, and promptly notifying supervisor of low inventory.
I. Maintains an organized work environment to enable another to take over job duties.
J. Demonstrates proficient use of the Laboratory Information System.
K. Participates in training of new staff members.
