Job Description

As a member of the surgical team, the surgical technician provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment. Duties include prepping and sterilizing the O.R. for surgery, transporting patients to and from the O.R., passing instruments and providing assistance to surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and O.R. staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure all staff are in compliance with established sterile standards and procedures.POSITION SUMMARY:

As a member of the surgical team, the surgical technician provides patient care during surgical procedures by providing an aseptic and safe environment. Duties include prepping and sterilizing rooms for surgery, transporting, passing instruments and providing assistance to surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses and other staff during surgery. Uses technical and aseptic techniques to ensure methodology is in compliance with established sterile standards and procedures.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:

Provides an aseptic, safe, appropriately equipped and functional surgical environment. Duties include, but are not limited to:

LABOR & DELIVERY:

Checks supplies/instrumentation and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures they are working properly. Reviews daily OR schedule for changes on a daily basis. Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for each surgical procedure. Directly assists the surgical team during surgical procedures, passing instruments and supplies as needed. Accountable for proper surgical instrument preparation, function, storage, and repair. Demonstrates knowledge of the function/use of sterilization equipment. Completes sterilization logs; processes and records the results of biological indicators; can verbalize importance of documentation accuracy. Handles, labels, and transports specimens properly. Assists in positioning, moving, and preparing patient for surgery under the direction of professional staff. Transfers patients to and from bed and stretchers. Stock patient care areas with needed supplies. Promotes department/program and hospitals mission,, by including the following:

Adapts to changes in the departmental needs including but not limited to: offering assistance to other team members, adjusting assignments, answering the telephone on patient care unit, responding to call lights, etc.

Conforms to hospital standards of performance and conduct, including those pertaining to patient rights, so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided.

Utilizes hospitals behavioral standards as the basis for decision making and to support the departments and the hospitals goals.

Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.

Performs other duties as needed.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

Requires high school diploma or equivalent. Must also be a graduate of an accredited/approved program in surgical technology (or completed an Armed Forces medic or corpsmen program).

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

Surgical Technician certification required

EXPERIENCE:

Previous surgical tech experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Ability to effectively speak read and write English
Ability to accurately interpret and use medical terminology and abbreviations
Computer proficiency to access and enter computerized data/information.
Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with patients, families, physicians and other hospital staff.
Organizational skills to effectively set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
