Dana-Farber Cancer Institute
The Vice President will report directly to the Chief Quality Officer. His/her scope of responsibility includes operational and budgetary oversight for the Department of Quality and Patient Safety (DPQS) including the Patient Safety, Risk Management, Patient and Family Relations, Clinical Quality, Process Improvement, Cancer Registry Services, and Clinical Regulatory Compliance. With the Chief Quality Officer and in strong collaboration and partnership with the Chief Medical Officer and Chief Nursing Officer, the Vice President will determine the strategic priorities of the Department and related DFCI initiatives. The scope of the Departments work includes all DFCI ambulatory and inpatient sites of care, within a highly matrixed organization.
Along with his/her staff, in conjunction with Chief Quality Officer, the Vice President will represent the DFCI locally and nationally in matters of cancer care quality, patient safety and public reporting and as needed with organizations such as CMS, JC, NQF, COC, NPSF, ASCO, AHRQ, NCQA, ADCC, DPH and others. In both internal and external settings, he/she will be expected to represent the Department and Chief Quality Officer when required, including the Board of Trustees.
The Vice President will be located principally at the DQPS headquarters at 375 Longwood Avenue. He/she will be provided executive administrative support. Some travel will be required.
Strategic oversight for the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. With the Chief Quality Officer, the Vice President will collaborate with DFCI leadership (including Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing officer) to establish strategic priorities/annual goals in quality and patient safety for the Institute. With the Chief Quality Officer, the Vice President will establish strategic priorities for the Department and determine Department initiatives. The Vice President will routinely evaluate the quality, safety efficiency and regulatory programs at Dana-Farber, identify innovations and best practices, and seek continuous improvement. The Vice President will prepare and implement plans for Department growth, reorganization, and collaboration to best meet DFCI needs.
Provide expert consultation to DFCI Leadership. The Vice President will serve as a subject matter expert to DFCI leaders and managers regarding relevant national quality and safety initiatives, programs, and trends. This includes but is not limited to federal quality programs, alternate payment models of relevance to oncology, and methodologies being tested in health care to enhance quality and/or safety.
Operational oversight for the Department of Quality and Patient Safety. The Vice President will supervise the Departments executive team. He/she will meet regularly with each of these staff members, provide annual reviews and ongoing coaching and mentoring. As operational Vice President, he/she will have accountability for all functional areas within the Department. The Vice President will collaborate with colleagues at other institutions such as at Boston Childrens Hospital, the Brigham and Womens Hospital and Partners Healthcare. He/she will lead development and oversight of the Department budget.
Quality and patient safety data access. Responsibility to provide tight integration across DFCI departments to assure that required quality and patient safety data are collected in clinical data repositories.
Reports and dashboards. Overall accountability for publically reported measures and other quality and patient safety reporting for external and internal purposes. This includes dashboards to meet regulatory requirements. Oversight includes supervision of directors and managers who oversee these areas on a day-to-day basis. Reporting examples include data submitted to the Medicare PCHQR Program, the Commission on Cancer Rapid Quality Reporting System, and the Institute QAPI program.
External collaborations. Overall responsibility for interactions with public and private organizations and agencies with which the DFCI interfaces. These include, but are not limited to, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, The Joint Commission, the National Quality Forum, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. The Vice President will assume responsibility for the relationship with relevant committees of the Alliance for Dedicated Cancer Centers and C4QI, along with and others at DFCI. The Vice President will be expected to attend national meetings such as the National Patient Safety Foundation, ASCO Quality Symposium and the National Quality Forum, or to delegate this responsibility.
eCare. Overall DQPS responsibility for eCare. Delegating to and collaborating with others in the Department, the Vice President will ensure that DQPS is represented at the institutional and enterprise level and that safety, regulatory, reporting and analytic needs involving eCare are anticipated and met.
Administrative leadership. The Vice President will serve as an administrative leader at Dana-Farber, including attending standing management meetings and serving as Administrator on Call. The Vice President will represent DQPS at relevant meetings within the DFCI and externally on a regular or ad hoc basis as requested by the Chief Quality Officer. This includes Board of Trustee-level and senior leadership meetings.
Supervises director/manager level positions for all teams within DQPS report to the Vice President. The Vice Presidents actual number of direct reports may change to reflect grant-funded projects and other structural changes. At any given time, the Vice President may directly manage 12 or more staff.
Candidates for the position of Vice President will have at least 10 years of experience in managing quality and patient safety preferably in cancer care. Prior experience must include significant leadership roles including managing staff, reporting to senior leadership, and working in complex and/or highly matrixed organizations. A masters degree with a health-related focus and/or a comparable clinical degree is required. The following knowledge, skills, and abilities are required for this position:

Excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communications
Sound judgment skills, and maturity to work with multiple levels of staff within and outside of the Institute

Strong public speaking and presentation skills
Superior organizational skills to manage a large volume of incoming data, information, reports, etc. in paper and electronic formats
Ability to manage a wide variety of competing projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet tight deadlines
Ability to develop effective relationships with a broad array of people from diverse backgrounds
Ability to work with and communicate with staff at all levels on issues of sometimes complex, sensitive, and confidential nature
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; expertise with Visio and Excel preferred.
