Summary of Responsibilities
The DFCI Data Warehouse (DW) Director is a critical member of the Informatics and Analytics team supporting the development and implementation of the enterprise data warehouse in support of DFCIs mission to improve cancer care and research. This is a hands-on position that requires a technical and functional understanding of healthcare analytics and data warehousing as well as a strong understanding of DFCIs core business functions.
The primary responsibilities of this role are to be the liaison with the users of the data warehouse and to develop a support function for the users in the Informatics & Analytics team and across DFCI that will ensure appropriate needs analysis, effective technical implementations, reliable data delivery and exceptional data quality and usability.
Secondary responsibilities include facilitating the technical development and implementation activities related to setting up and operating the new DFCI DW.
This position supports and implements strategies defined by the Informatics Leadership Team (LT)- the DFCIs Director of Data Services, Vice President of Analytics, Senior Director of Bioinformatics and Technical Director.
This role will operate in a matrix organization with primary reporting to the Technical Director and to the Vice President of Analytics.
This position will work with the Director of Data Services and the technical team to implement policies and procedures to ensure the integrity and availability of all warehouse data and supporting applications. As such, it is expected that the individual will understand healthcare data warehousing concepts and has experience in integrating data from healthcare systems. The focus areas of this work will be broad and include obtaining and integrating data from financial/ administrative, research and clinical systems.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
This role oversees the implementation of different aspects of the Informatics & Analytics strategy:
Data Integration Strategy
Data Warehouse design, implementation & operation
Harmonization of Research/Clinical/Operational concepts
Policies and Procedures of Data Warehouse Access
Develop a support function(Informatics & Analytics team and DFCI users in general)
The responsibilities of this role include but are not limited to:
Strategic design of the DW to succeed supporting Informatics strategic initiatives
Works jointly with the Director of Data Services, Senior Data Services technical staff, the Technical Director, and Analytics team leads to develop and maintain a reliable and high-performance data warehousing environment.
Act as a liaison for the data services to provide support to various teams across the institute including Clinical Operations and Business Analytics (COBA), Clinical Research Analytics, Clinical Curation systems, and other groups
Supports the Health Catalyst engagement for the development of the new DFCI Data Warehouse and the implementation of the Informatics and Analytics Data Strategy. Provides written and oral communication on the overall status of implementation of these activities.
Work cooperatively with other Informatics teams to develop strategic and tactical plans to facilitate and coordinate the delivery of technical services.
Data and Terminology Management
Responsible for data acquisition and maintaining relationships with DFCI operational affiliates to facilitate data sharing.
Develops detailed technical project plans, and manages deliverables to ensure that projects are delivered on time and with high quality.
Directs the development of manual and automated data analysis and quality assurance processes that will ensure the efficient delivery of high quality data.
Works jointly with Analytics customers and all Informatics areas to identify and implement technologies and processes that meet key business needs, including but not limited to terminology, ontologies, documentation and data quality
Management of legacy technologies and platforms need to support research, clinical and operational needs Informatica, tidal, and legacy data stores(DART). Works with DFCI and PHS infrastructure groups to ensure appropriate system performance, security and data backups.
Management and Training Functions
Make recommendations to analytics users across the institute regarding data structure, data organization, data access and use of data for analytics
Manages relationships with key source system contacts, and source system subject matter experts
Coordinate the development, organization and maintenance of training modules for the data systems for analytic users with the Analytics teams covering clinical, research operations and operations
Develop an analytics user support function and inform development of the new DFCI Data Warehouse, including initial development of extraction/integration routines, as well as the on-going production operations and maintenance.
Access, Policy & Security
Develops processes and workflows to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with corporate policy.
Manages relationships with vendors, including performance expectations and issue resolution.
Leads the development of processes and procedures that ensure not only that data is only accessed by appropriate users, but also that all DFCI policies and external regulations are complied with.
Hires, manages, and mentors team of data architects, data analysts and data/ETL developers.
7+ years of experience designing and building large-scale software solutions in a leadership role. Served as lead architect, lead engineer, or scrum master for successful scientific / analytical software solutions.
Minimum 5 years building customer-facing software solutions in a biomedical or health-care environment. Industry experience desired.
7+ years managing and coaching technical staff
MS in software engineering or computer science
Direct experience developing and supporting business analytics platform(s)
Broad technical background with hands-on experience and proficiency in modern analytics platform technologies, including Hadoop, and modern programming languages.

Exceptional interpersonal and collaboration skills, demonstrated ability to be effective within a complex organizational structure

Expert knowledge of relational database technologies like Oracle and SQL Server as well as NoSQL technologies oriented towards scientific problems like graph-based storage
Experience with ETL tools, such as SSIS and Informatica is strongly preferred.
Knowledge of data exchange standards, such as FHIR and HL7, is preferred
Experience working with big data types, such as text, imaging and device data, is strongly preferred.
Ability to communicate, written and verbally, analytical concepts in business terms
Ability to consolidate themes in order to maximize resources
Ability to build consensus and influence stakeholders to obtain buy-in
Ability to manage multiple projects of varying complexity in a dynamic environment where priorities are frequently changing

Must be willing to serve both hands-on and in a management capacity, as needed.
Professional environment, some local (Longwood Campus) travel required for face-to-face meeting at other DFCI sites
This role will begin with supervision of the Data Warehousing team, 4-7 of them will be focused on analytics involving Research, Clinical and Operations areas.
Responsible for efficiently manage budgets for technology, consulting staff and maintenance.
