The individual will play an important role in DFCI's technology transfer and business development efforts as a member of the Belfer Office for Dana-Farber Innovations (BODFI). BODFI is responsible for licensing intellectual property, establishing relationships with industry and generating research funding. Specific duties of the Senior Licensing Associate include: establishing rapport with faculty; assessing intellectual property potential of research results; making and defending patenting decisions; establishing and maintaining industry contacts; helping create business development opportunities; and drafting and negotiating agreements including term sheets, licenses, and sponsored research agreements.


The Senior Licensing Associate possesses a substantial level of independence and authority for decision making in the process of working with DFCI faculty and industry on commercializing DFCI intellectual property:
Independently manage a substantial portfolio of technologies throughout the technology transfer process, including overseeing patenting, marketing, and licensing.
Negotiate and execute complex intellectual property licensing, industry sponsored research agreements, and collaborations.
Manage existing and new alliances by helping track deliverables, milestones, overall progress and IP opportunities, keeping DFCI scientists aware of their rights and obligations, and planning ahead to create renewal opportunities.
Train and mentor interns and junior staff; potential to supervise one or more junior staff
Business development work may includeDeveloping presentations with DFCI faculty input
Making contacts with industry
Arranging presentations at DFCI or at the company's facility
Completing transactions via budget development, term sheets and agreement negotiations.


Bachelors degree in chemistry/biology/biochemistry or similar required; JD or PhD degree preferred.
Previous experience (five or more years) with academic technology transfer and/or biotechnology business development including experience with academic licensing is required; experience in both academia and industry is preferred. Specifically, a track record of successful negotiation, and familiarity with contract language, basic legal principles, and intellectual property, are essential.
Demonstrated ability to supervise and teach others and/or to lead projects.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
A self-starter with the ability to identify creative solutions to problems, work collaboratively, pay attention to detail, manage/coordinate multiple projects, and close transactions in a timely manner.
