Job Description

The Infection Control Practitioner (ICP) is responsible for the surveillance, identification, prevention and control of infections within the hospital. The ICP acts as a consultant for all departments regarding infection control issues. Collaborates with a wide range of disciplines to provide a comprehensive infection control program for the hospital.

Major Responsibilities:

Coordinates regulatory reporting to the National Healthcare Surveillance Network (NHSN).

Designs, organizes, promotes and monitors multifaceted preventive and corrective programs to minimize infection hazards in accordance with CMS, TJC, CDC, APIC, OSHA, etc.

Consults and collaborates with all departments and community representatives regarding infection control issues in accordance with regulatory agencies.

Takes appropriate measures to prevent and/or control the acquisition and transmission of infectious agents in the patient, staff, and visitor populations.

Performs nosocomial surveillance and reports data according to department policies and procedures.

Maintains currency and ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies.

Performs Infection Control rounds and sends results to appropriate manager.

Develops, presents, and/or coordinates the presentation of relevant and current educational materials and programs.

Acts as a resource and subject matter expert for all employees to assist them with Infection Control questions.

Reports all reportable organisms/diseases within the given guidelines set by the MA Department of Public Health.

Documents all correspondence of patient information on the Accounting of Disclosure Forms.

Sends records to HIS monthly.

Meets established productivity standards.

Facilitates and promotes the sharing of knowledge and content throughout departments.

Takes responsibility for ensuring that all work outcomes satisfy the UMass Memorial Health System True North.

Adheres to change control processes.

Participates in cross training to optimize department resources.

Demonstrates excellent attendance and actively participates in a variety of meetings and training sessions as required.

Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required or directed. Keeps current with hospital and unit changes by reading communication boards and/or books, bulletin boards, posted notices and reads and responds to e mails on a regular basis.

Practices cost containment and fiscal responsibility through the efficient use of supplies, equipment, time, etc.

Complies with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives.

Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.

Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.

Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

Respects diverse views and approaches, and contributes in maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.

Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
